“She was barely over 5-feet-tall and weighed well over 200 pounds,” recalled Kay of the 15-year-old girl she’d been fostering. “She was afraid she wouldn’t have access to food, she’d eat anything she found as quickly as possible. Or she would hide food in her bedroom.”
Having retired two years ago, Kay decided to use her free time doing foster care. Living on a fixed income, she used our food shelf to supplement her access to nutritional food for the extra mouths to feed at home. “The things these kids have gone through, no one should have to go through, especially children. It’s rewarding being able to offer them a safe place,” she shared. Because of your generous support, Kay is able to access healthy food, allowing her current foster daughter to worry less about whether or not she’ll have food to eat.
“She’s lost over 35 pounds since she’s been with me. She’s finally learning how to cook and prepare healthy snacks,” said Kay. “I wanted to give back, but honestly I couldn’t afford to do this without the food shelf’s support.”
