“Thank you so much,” was the response from a young, shy student at
Maple/Northwestern School, when he received his first food from our
BackPack Program. His parents had suffered health issues in recent
months, and he was bubbling with excitement as he picked up his food.
“Thank you, this is great,” he kept quietly repeating.
It’s a story shared a hundred times. One of a quiet, shy student who
connects with his teacher, guidance councilor or other school staffer
over food – the BackPack Program that is.
“It’s a relationship builder,” said Jenny Forsythe, the At Risk and Schoolto-
Work Coordinator, at his school. “When we hand out the food it’s an
opportunity to check in with our kids and to offer our support. I had one
boy who was very apprehensive at the beginning. I happened to see
him at the grocery store and he came up to me and said, ‘How are you,
Ms. Forsythe?’ I knew a connection had been made and I knew he was
comfortable with me.”
We’re grateful for donors like you who help
us not only provide weekend food to over
1,000 children weekly as part of our BackPack
Program, but provide connections for children
in 16 communities throughout NE Minnesota
and NW Wisconsin.
With your continued support we plan to expand our BackPack Program. Every dollar you contribute will allow us to feed more children in need (THANK YOU!).
