For more than 40 years, your generosity has ensured our neighbors have access to nutritious food. Your support also powers the infrastructure behind that work, from our new facility and expanded freezer and cooler, to the trucks that help move nearly 11 million meals each year.
Together with food shelves and other partners, we support neighbors facing hunger throughout our 15-county, 27,000-square-mile, mostly rural NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin service region.
Last fall, when the government shutdown paused the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Ann, a working mother of four, suddenly lost access to eggs, dairy, meat, and vegetables. “With SNAP being paused, I didn’t have a reliable way to feed my kids,” Ann shares. “I learned about Second Harvest, and it helped fill the gaps with nutritious food.”
In uncertain times, families like Ann’s turn to the 70 area food shelves we support. Mable, a volunteer who has managed the Silver Bay Food Shelf for more than two decades, sees the impact every day. “Without our partnership with Second Harvest Northland, we couldn’t provide the amount, quality, or variety of food our community needs,” she shares. “Since their move to the larger facility in Duluth, we’ve received more fresh foods like vegetables, meat, and dairy.”
This summer, we will complete the final phase of our $20 million Nourish the Northland Capital Campaign, building a new Market (our grocery-style food shelf) and volunteer and community engagement center.
Now is the time to build our future. Individual gifts are being matched up to $500,000 by Royal and Karen Alworth, corporate gifts up to $500,000 by Super One Foods and the Miner family, and volunteer gifts up to $50,000 by an anonymous volunteer. Your gift today will help ensure even more Northland neighbors have access to nutritious food tomorrow. Here’s a sampling of generous partners who are already having impact:
